President Trump interviewed by Lester Holt on NBC
Trump has virtually nothing to gain by giving interviews to the Mass Media. They hate him and will use every interview as an attempt to destroy him.
At the end of his show last Thursday, Rush Limbaugh had some sage advice for President Trump, “Stop watching the news and focus on the agenda Mr. President!”
He needs to stop watching the news, number one. Trust me on this. That’s why I don’t watch it anymore. I don’t. It’s an alternative reality anyway. It’s not what’s real. The steel industry is thriving; the mining industry is thriving. There’s too much to do! Tax reform, repealing Obamacare. He’s the guy that has to drive those things. It’s not gonna be driven in Congress. The legislation is not gonna come from K Street. He has to do it. The more he’s distracted by this stuff — which is one of its intentions. The media’s purpose is to destroy him. The Democrats want to distract him so the agenda can’t go forward. If Trump succeeds with his agenda, they’re not gonna win anything in ’18 or ’20. So Trump needs to stop getting bogged down. I don’t mind him tweeting because he’s the only guy reacting, but don’t watch and absorb all this stuff and have it govern what you think of the day every day. This stuff is poison. It’s, by definition, negative. It’s, by definition, destructive. It’s aimed at harming him. And all he’s watching is the evidence and the progress and the success every day that that movement to destroy him is having. He’s gotta stop watching it. He’s gotta stop being a consumer of news like he was when he was a civilian.
For the past month or so Rush has been promoting the idea that the Democrats aren’t controlling the narrative against Trump, the Mass Media is. This idea isn’t entirely new, and though Rush is a longtime analyst of the news I think his analysis doesn’t go far enough. The best take on the Mass Media I have come across thus far is Professor Bruce Charlton’s book, Addicted to Distraction: Psychological Consequences of the Modern Mass Media, which I reviewed here. The relevant assertion from Professor Charlton’s book (I highly recommend reading it in its entirety), is that the Mass Media has become the embodiment of the modern left, engaged in a permanent revolution against traditional society and all its institutions (the family, traditional Christianity, the military, civic organizations like the Boy Scouts, etc.). It’s troubling that President Trump seems so preoccupied with the Mass Media, as if the distorted picture presented through its prism bears any resemblance to reality. The Mass Media will never present Trump favorably if he remains true to the promises he made on the campaign trail. It may well be a good measure of Trump’s success in fact if the media remains eternally hostile towards him. No one wants to be hated, especially as viciously as Trump has been for nearly two years. It’s not a stretch to say that no public figure has been more vilified than Trump other than Adolf Hitler (and even that is debatable, as Hitler never faced the 24-hour news cycle and onslaught of the social media megaphone). It’s becoming increasingly evident however that pathological hatred (“Trump derangement syndrome”) from a vocal minority will be his cross to bear. I pray that God will give him the strength to carry it.
